Soup's On! (Preschool and Two's)

Preschool Storytime

Opening: Big Books

Book: Duck Soup

*I had so much fun with this book! I really didn't expect the kids to enjoy this book as much as they did. All of duck's friends think that he fell in the soup, because each piece of food looks like duck. For instance, duck's friends thought the carrots were duck's feet! What I did was have little paper pieces made up that I placed in my soup pot. As I read the book, my volunteer pulled each piece out and I would scream and say that it was duck. Quite a few of the kids caught on and told me it wasn't, it was just a carrot, or a potato. This is a great book that you can make interactive to involve the kids.

Fingerplay/Flannel: “Vegetable Soup” (tune: Farmer in the Dell)
    The soup is bubbling up (raise hands in air)
    The soup is bubbling up (raise hands in air)
    Stir it slow, around we go, (stir soup)
    The soup is boiling up (raise hands in air)
            Now we add some {carrots}
            Now we add some {carrots}
Stir it slow, around we go, (stir soup)
Now we add some {carrots}
    *Repeat first line: The soup is boiling up
    Now we add some {corn}
     Now we add some {corn}
Stir it slow, around we go, (stir soup)
Now we add some {corn}
*Repeat first line: The soup is boiling up
*I found this great fingerplay here. To make this more visual, my volunteer held up a big soup pot she made for me out of black posterboard. The we added paper food to it so that we could make soup as we sang. The kids really enjoyed doing this.

Book: There’s a Giraffe In My Soup!
*I am completely head over heels in love with this book, and the kids went crazy over it! Don't you love the giraffe with his big, giant smile? I had a soup pot with a lid, and my volunteer acted out the part of the waiter. All through the book, the little boy is delivered animals inside his soup pot. Everything from an alligator to an elephant appears. I had all these animals appear inside my soup pot and the kids screamed hysterically! It was so much fun! The reason why all the animals are in the soup? The restaurant was delivered the zoo animals and the zoo was delivered the food for the restaurant!

Fingerplay/Flannel: Snowman
Snowman, snowman, hat so red, pat your legs and nod your head.
Snowman, snowman, hat so blue, touch your knee, then your shoe.
Snowman, snowman, hat so white, clap your hands with all your might.
Snowman, snowman, hat so green, jump up like a jumping bean.
Snowman, snowman, hat so brown, reach up high then touch the ground.
Snowman, snowman, hat so black, rub your tummy, then touch your back.
Snowman, snowman turn around and sit back down!
*For this flannel, I put up my snowman without his hat. Then we do the actions that go along with each different hat. My favorite part was when a little girl kept telling me that the snowman needed his black hat!

Book: To Market, To Market (With Puppets)
*This is my stand-by book for soup storytime, and the kids really enjoyed it this time! As I read the book, the puppets pop up behind me. When I get to the part of the book with all the vegetables listed, I take my flannel pieces and add them to my big soup pot. When I started doing this, some of the kids let me know very quickly if the liked or disliked that piece of food. So much fun!

Action: Feed Rabbit
*This is one of my favorite action things to do, and the kids loved it! I keep a box handy, and just change out the animals on the front of it to match whatever we are going to feed during that storytime. Check out where I found this fabulous idea at here!

Fingerplay: This is the Way (Tune: Mulberry Bush)
This is the way we stomp around, stomp around, stomp around.
This is the way we stomp around our soup in the morning.
*Twirl around, Hop, Tiptoe, Shake
*We ran out of time for this fingerplay, but I think the kids would have enjoyed it.

Music: Alphabet Soup
Moonboat
*This was probably the favorite part of storytime for the kids. What I did was hand out magnetic letters to the kids. I played the Alpahbet Soup song for the kids, and let them throw their letters into the pot! A very simple and inexpensive thing to do, but they loved it!

Extra Read-Aloud Books:
I Really Like Slop!
That Is Not a Good Idea!

Our craft today was a bowl of soup!  The kids got to glue on paper pieces representing the soup and we had foam letters they could put on their soup also.  We didn't do this, but you could let the kids color their soup brown before gluing the pieces down.

I really didn't expect to enjoy this theme so much, but it was a blast!  Everyone had so much fun, and I had a lot of compliments too.  This is one I will be repeating again next year!

Time for Two’s Storytime

I had all these animals appear inside my soup pot and I expected the kids to scream! I think the two's were taken aback that the animals were appearing in my soup, and not behind me like they usually do. The reason why all the animals are in the soup? The restaurant was delivered the zoo animals and the zoo was delivered the food for the restaurant!

*I ran out of time to do this flannel this week.

Book: Yum, Yum!
*I ran out of time for this great book!

Action: Feed Rabbit Carrots

*I handed out magnetic letters to the kids. I played the Alpahbet Soup song for the kids, and let them throw their letters into the pot! A very simple and inexpensive thing to do, but they loved it! I will have to remember not to use my ladle next time, because some of the two's wanted to help me stir my soup! A great idea to have them help me, but I didn't have enough time to give everybody a turn.

Our craft today was a bowl of soup!  The kids got to glue on paper pieces representing the soup and we had foamie stick letters they could put on their soup too.  We didn't do this, but you could let the kids color their soup brown before gluing the pieces down.
