Silly!

Book: Let’s Sing a Lullaby with the Brave Cowboy by Jan Thomas

Fingerplay/Flannel: Silly Bananas
I walked up to the banana like a monkey in a zoo.
I began to peel the banana skin back and saw the banana inside was BLUE
I grabbed a second banana and hid under the sink.
I began to peel the banana skin back and saw the banana inside was PINK
I snuck back in the kitchen trying not to make a scene.
I began to peel the banana skin back and saw the banana inside was GREEN
I tiptoed to the kitchen but it was not getting time for bed.
I began to to peel the banana skin back to only to find this banana inside was RED
I decided to give it one more try……
So I ran into the kitchen, and stared at the last banana.
Stared at it with all my might.
I grabbed the banana and peeled the skin back and guess what?????????
The banana was finally WHITE!

(Everybody spin hands around and wave scarf in a circle)
Noodles on a fork, noodles on a fork

Let's Get Silly! (Preschool and Two's)

When I do a silly storytime, I like to make everything I possibly can look silly, including myself! I put holiday tablecloths on my tables, stand all the books upside-down , and put up a silly bulletin board. I like to wear my Dr. Seuss boxers, different animal houseshoes, and a silly headband.

Opening: Big Books

Book: Help!  Wolf is Coming!
*The kids loved this book! I was hesitant about using a board book with the preschoolers, but this book is an interactive book, so that won me over. All through the book the wolf is inching closer and closer to you, and you have to prevent him from catching you by doing all sorts of fun actions. The kids really got into doing everything along with me and we had lots of fun with this book.

Fingerplay/Flannel: Silly Bananas
*The kids went crazy over this flannelboard! I found this wonderful idea here. My favorite part of this was peeling the banana down and letting the kids shout out the color of the banana.

Book:  Polar Bear’s Underwear
*Who doesn't love a polar bear in underwear! I love reading this book for silly storytime, and the kids loved this book! It always helps when you use puppets, which we did for this book.

Fingerplay/Flannel: “Oh Where Has My Underwear Gone?” (Tune: Where Has My Little Dog Gone?)
Oh where, oh where has my {green} underwear gone?
Oh where, oh where can they be?
I’ve looked up high, and I’ve looked down low,
Did someone hide them from me?
*For this fingerplay, I took animals that had been made from clipart and put underwear on them. Then I took trees and bushes, and covered up just the underwear of the animals with the tree or bush. Next I asked the kids what color underwear the animals were wearing, before we revealed what the underwear looked like. The kids enjoyed this, but not as much as I had hoped.

Book: Book With No Pictures
*I love reading this book for the kids and making all the crazy and wacky sounds! Usually the kids go wild over this and want me to read it again, but this time it just didn't go over as well as it normal does. It's still a wonderfully silly read, one I will definitely use again.

Music: Shake Your Sillies

Action: I’m Being Eaten By a Boa Constrictor
*This is my favorite thing to do for the kids, and we take a giant hula hoop and turn it into a snake! The snake will end up eating me by going up and over my head! I'll be glad to explain how, just leave me a comment and I'll e-mail you a picture and how it's done. This was done by the librarian before me, and it never fails to entertain the kids. While saying the poem I will slowly inch the snake up my body. While I was doing this, the kids were utterly quiet, but in a good way!

Our craft was polar bear in his underwear!  I found the idea for this here, which also has a link for the coloring page that we used for our craft.  There are also some great flannelboard ideas, which I hope to use next time.  For the craft, the kids glued down polar bear's red underwear and little squares to decorate it with.

Time for Two’s Storytime

Opening: Big Books

Fingerplay: If You Want to Hear a Story

Book: Polar Bear’s Underwear (With Puppets)
*Who doesn't love a polar bear in underwear! I love reading this book for silly storytime, but the two's enjoy this book as much as they usually do. That's okay, it's still a fun, silly book!

Fingerplay/Flannel: Five Little Monkeys Swinging in the Tree
*You can't go wrong with this great fingerplay! The two's loved singing it today!

Book:  Do Cows Meow? (With Puppets)

*The two's enjoyed this book and helping me make all the silly noise sounds.

Music: Shake Your Sillies Out
*It's always fun acting silly and this time all our puppets jumped up and helped us! The two's loved seeing all the puppets dance behind me.

Action: Dinosaur Dancing

Monster Mash (Preschool)

Monster Mash
Preschool Storytime

Opening: Big Books

Book: “Monsters Love Colors”
*The kids loved, loved, loved this book! I got the idea for using prop monsters from this website. Below is a picture of what I did during storytime. What I do is I hide my monsters (made from construction paper and laminated) inside a cauldron, behind a pocket. Then I show the kids my empty cauldron. As I read the book, I will put in my two monsters that make a color, and pull out of the pocket the monster that we've created. Then I will place the monsters on the flannelboard and go back to mixing again. At the end of the book you make a rainbow monster. For that, I put all my monsters inside the pocket that I have taped inside the cauldron. Before I pull out the rainbow monster, I will show the kids the empty cauldron and ask them what they did with my monsters. They got super quiet at this point and had the cutest expressions. Then, viola! I pull out the rainbow monster and they went crazy! Such a fun book that teaches how mixing colors will create new colors and it makes you look like you're magical too!

Fingerplay: “Monster, Monster”
Monster, monster, turn around
Monster, monster, touch the ground
Monster, monster, touch the sky
Monster, monster, wave goodbye
Monster, monster, pat your head
Monster, monster, go to bed
Monster, monster, turn around
Monster, monster, sit back down
Book/Flannel: Monsters Go Night-Night”
*This book was the favorite pick by the kids. They asked that I read it again, which hasn't happened in a while. Each page opens up with a monster, and a question. You have four choices to pick from. I asked the kids what they thought the answer was, and it's always the silliest choice. I either had a flannel piece to put on the board or the actual prop to show them to correspond with each correct answer. They laughed more and more with each page, except for the page about where do monsters go to the bathroom. I thought that would be the funniest page, but it ended up not being so. Awesome book that I highly recommend doing and I plan on using it again next year!

Fingerplay/Flannel: “Five Little Monsters Jumping on the Bed”
*Here is the website where you can print out some adorable monsters for your flannelboard. We had a blast jumping up and down! Of course, if you're jumping the kids will want to do this again, and they did.

Fingerplay/Flannel: “Monster, Monster”
Monster, monster, where can you be?
Shout out a color on the count of three!
*I came up with this fingerplay because I wanted to have a hiding game to use with a monster. I used the same pieces from a previous flannelboard where we hunted for a lion, and you can see it here. I just switched the lion out for a monster.

Book: “Monsters Love Underpants
*The cover of this book cracks me up everytime I see it! Sadly, we ran out of time for this book. This is a great rhyming book and the illustrations are hilarious. Definitely a great read-aloud.

Song: “Silly Dance Contest”
*You can't have a monster mash storytime without dancing! We got up danced, shaked and clapped. I was surprised, but the kids wanted to dance again. This reminded me that I need to do more dancing and music with them, which is always fun.

Book: “Go Away, Big Green Monster!”
*Classic book, that you can't go wrong with. The kids were very engrossed with this book and started screaming as I made the monster disappear. I've read it many times, but they really got into it this time. I had so much fun reading it and it's a standby that I will always go to.

Below is our craft, and here is the website where it was found. There are a lot of other cute variations of it also. My favorite part of this craft is that the mouth of the monster opens up to reveal the tongue and teeth. I think that was the kids' favorite thing about it.
