Happy Birthday, Dr. Suess! (Preschool and Two's)
Preschool Storytime:
Opening: Big Books
Action: Real vs. Silly Cake Ingredient Sort
*I was so excited to do this activity for the preschoolers! I used a cute little flannel oven I had, and brought real flour and sugar to sprinkle into my bowl. Then I put my "dough" into my flannel oven and pulled out my birthday cake! Usually when I do something like this the preschoolers are so happy, but for whatever reason they weren't as thrilled this time. But that's okay, it's still such a cute idea to use silly ingredients!

*This is my go-to book for a birthday or pizza storytime. I was afriad the preschoolers would be tired of this book, but thankfully they still loved it!
Fingerplay/Flannel: Cat in the Hat
*For this wonderful idea, I put up Cat in the Hat, but without his hat. Then I asked the preschoolers to help me find his hat! Of course, I put up many things that aren't correct, until I find the one that fits just right! I couldn't link the website, because it isn't secure, but I'm sure you can find it!

Book: Hop on Pop (Read two pages where we jump up and down)
*I am trying to add more elements from my recent storytime training, and this presented the perfect opportunity. I made a "stop" and "go" sign. Before I read the two pages out of our book, I held up the two signs and asked the preschoolers if they could tell me what my signs said. Quite a few of them could tell me, which was great! After that, I pointed to each letter and we all said the letters of each word together. Then I told them that I would hold up the go sign and we would all jump! When I held up the stop sign, that would me stop! We ended up doing this three times before we stopped.
Book: Pete the Cat and the Missing Cupcakes
*I have to read my favorite book about cupcakes this time of year and Pete the Cat is the best! For this book, I have ten cupcakes set up behind me on the puppet stage. As I'm reading, my volunteer will pull the cupcakes down behind me, much to the preschoolers delight!
Book: The Mixed-Up Truck
*I am so happy that I used this book with props! I decided to bring actual flour with me, to show the preschoolers what the mixed-up truck was using. I took some of the flour, put it in the palm of my hand and blew on it so that it would fly through the air. In no way did I expect the reaction of the preschoolers! They begged me to do it over and over! Next time I will bring powdered sugar, just because it's easier to handle. The best part of this book was the ending. Why? Because the adorable truck causes bubbles to happen! Of course, I had to do this too! We have to fabulous hand-held bubble machines, that run on batteries. You literally just fill them with solution, turn them on, and instantly bubbles will come pouring out of them. On two tables I had both machines prepped and ready to go, but I covered them up so that none of the preschoolers would know about them. All I told them was that there would be a surprise at the end of the book. When I showed the page of the book where mixed-up truck created bubbles, my volunteer and I turned on the bubble machines. POOF! Bubbles went flying everywhere and the preschoolers loved it! I was afraid instant chaos would have ensued, but everyone was very courteous to each other. I think the biggest factor in this was because we had two machines. I don't break out the bubbles very often, but they are beneficial. Kids of all ages can get a lot out of bubbles because they help develop fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.

I never pass up an opportunity to dress up for the preschoolers, so today I had to be the Cat in the Hat!

Hooray for Hat! (Preschool)
Preschool Storytime:
*I have to say, this is my first time doing a hat storytime, and it was so much fun! Everything went really good, and the preschoolers seemed to have a great time. This is a theme I definitely plan on revisiting again. My wonderful volunteer (my mom) made me a beautiful crown to wear for storytime!

*This is a great guessing book to use for storytime. The preschoolers really enjoyed guessing who wore each hat!

Book/Flannel: Hooray for Hat!
*If you've never used this book before, I highly recommend it! One of the best parts is the repetition of the line "Hooray for Hat!" It's a great way to get the preschoolers involved in the reading of the book with you. This is a great way to teach your preschooler how to spell h-a-t! I made a flannelboard to go along with the book, and all my animals had a grumpy face and a happy face. I also made little hats to put on each animal. The best part of this book was when a little girl looked at me and said "Boy, you sure are grumpy!" I just had to stop and laugh! This let me know that at least I was portraying the grumpiness!

Book: A Good Day for Hat
*This has quickly become one of my new favorite books, because it can be used for so many themes. Bears, hats or birthday! If you know me and my storytime, one of my favorite things to do is cut up small pieces of things from construction paper and have these items "rain" down onto my preschoolers. Well, in this book bear keeps changing his hat! When the story starts, he goes outside and it's raining! So, I have paper raindrops to "rain" down on the preschoolers. Later on, rabbits are hopping around outside, so I have paper rabbits to "rain" down on the preschoolers. I do this all throughout the book. But I wanted to also show the hats off to the kids, so I made a big bear and taped him to a box, and had each hat made. Then my hats would tape to a box that could be changed out as the story went along. I have a picture below so that this makes more sense. At the end of the story all the hats come tumbling down from the bears head, so I had two boxes stacked up and they all came tumbling down! Even the adults laughed loudly at that! I love thinking outside the box (I couldn't resist!) and bringing the story to life for kids.
Our craft today was a zebra hat! I've never done a hat before with the preschoolers, so I wasn't sure how they would do, but they loved it! All of them wore their hat downstairs after storytime! I will definitely look for another hat craft. I'm wearing the zebra hat, so I hope that you can see what it looks like.

Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss! (Preschool and Two's)

Book: Shorty & Clem
*I was so excited to read this book! Shorty the dinosaur opens his friends birthday present, and inside is monkey houseshoes! Of course, I have my own monkey houseshoes! So I put them in a box and opened them up in front of the kids as I was reading the story. Sometimes a story just doesn't work, and unfortunately this one didn't work in storytime. But I still think it's a great story!

*Since this book is lengthy, I only read two pages where it says "We like to hop on top of pop". I usually hold up a stop sign and we jump up and down until I hold up my sign and say STOP!
Book: Pete the Cat and the Missing Cupcakes
*Who doesn't love Pete the Cat? He rocks! For this book I prop up ten cupcakes behind me on the puppet stage. As I'm reading, the cupcakes will disappear behind me just like the do in the book. The kids love seeing items disappear and this one never disappoints.

*The kids always love telling me that I have the wrong color or wrong item. But this time they all jumped up off their carpet squares to correct me! I love it when they all get into the action or flannel board. It lets me know that I've truly grabbed their attention and I'm doing something right.

*We had a very special treat today. A co-worker and his brother assisted me with this story. While I read the book, one of the brothers did sign language! It was so much fun, the kids really enjoyed it. But I honestly think the parents got more out of it than the kids did! We are hoping to do this once a month as time goes on.

Time for Two’s Storytime:
*Sometimes you just decide at the last minute to change everything up! I had all different books picked out and wasn't happy with any of them. I'm really happy I switched them because the kids loved all of them that I read! I love having a plan and it terrifies me to think that I'd just have to jump up and do a storytime without any planning. But also, I don't stick to my plan exactly, I will change it up on a whim too. But I have to have a structured layout to go by. Some kind of organization has to be there for me and my OCD mind!

*The kids were so quiet but loved seeing the cupcake disappear! For this I have a giant cupcake on my flannelboard, and the top of it is in tiny pieces. As I read the story, I feed pieces to my puppets.
