Letter C Storytime

This week is the letter C for cats.  Below are the books I read (for all three storytimes-preschool, two's, lapsit), fingerplays and craft we made.

Book: Mister Kitty is Lost!

Fingerplay:
Ten little kittens stand in a row,
They bow their heads to the kids just so.
They run up high, they run down low.
They run real fast, they run real slow.
Along comes a puppy dog,
looking for some fun.
Woof, woof, woof!
Away those kittens run!

This week we had bedtime stories!  Below are the books that I read and fingerplays, along with our craft.

Opening Song

Book: Good Night Owl
*I love this book because mouse is hiding in a different spot on each page.  The kids love looking for mouse and telling me where he is.

Fingerplay/Song: Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed

Book: Don't You Know It's Bedtime?
*This book has doors that you can flip over to reveal each animal.   The kids loved guessing what animal would appear next.

Flannel/Hiding Game: Llama Llama
*For this I have different colored apples that open up.  I hide silly things in each one and tell the kids we are looking for "llama llama red pajama".  The kids can then guess what color apple they think llama is hiding behind.

Fingerplay:                                                                              Tune: Frere Jacques Walking, walking, Walking, walking.  Hop, hop, hop! Hop, hop, hop!  Running, running, running,  Running, running, running,  Now we stop.   Now we stop. Continue: Stomping, Flying

Book: Is Everyone Ready for Fun?
*This book will get you moving, literally! All through the book you will dance, jump and wiggle. This is always a crowd pleaser with any age.

This week our preschool age made a chicken sleeping.

This week our two's made a pig sleeping.

Once Upon a Goat (SRP Storytime)

Opening: Big Books

Book: Wolf Won't Bite!

Action/Flannel: Mary Had a Little Lamb

Book: Let's Count Goats!

Fingerplay/Flannel: Five Pigs
Five pigs so squeaky clean, cleanest you've ever seen!
One wanted to go outside and play....
(Flip pig over from clean to dirty)

One jumped into the mud, landed with a great big thud!
Then there were four clean squeaky pigs.

Book: Goatilocks and the Three Bears

The craft for today is a torn paper fox. I know, it doesn't go with a goat storytime, but the other storytime I did this week was woods. So, I just decided to do two animal crafts from the woods for this week.

Y is for Everybody is Yawning (Preschool and Two's)

Preschool Storytime:

Opening: Big Books

Book: Llama Llama Red Pajama (With novel effect app)
*If you have never used the Novel Effect app, please, go check it out right now! When I held up this book, almost all of the preschoolers told me they had it at home. Yes, I was fully expecting this reaction, right? Well, then I told them they may or may not hear noises, we would have to wait and see. I already had my bluetooth speaker hooked up and the Novel Effect app ready to go. As you read along, the app will listen to keywords you read. When you hit a certain word, then sound effects will go off to accompany you. This app is absolutely amazing! The preschoolers were spellbound by this! A few of them caught on that the noises were coming from my speaker but they couldn't figure out how. There are so many books to use with this app, I plan on using it again next week too!

Fingerplay/Flannel: Pete the Cat's Missing Button
*This time we hunted for Pete the Cat's button. We looked for his button behind Elephant & Piggie, Curious George, Llama Llama Red Pajama, Clifford and The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

Fingerplay: Put the Baby to Bed
*I love the reaction I received from the preschoolers after doing this fingerplay. The best things they suggested feeding the baby were cupcakes and a pumpkin! You can check out the words for this fingerplay below.

Book: Night Animals Need Sleep Too
*This is a brand new book we just got, and I was so excited to read it! I think this would work better if you read this to your child instead of a large group reading. Still, we all had fun acting like the night animals in the book!

Fingerplay/Flannel: Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed

Our craft today was based on the book "Bedtime for Baby Shark!" The preschoolers went crazy over the craft, which made me so happy! Basically everything you see in the picture the preschoolers glued down, which made for some very creative sharks!

Time for Two’s Storytime:

Opening: Big Books

Fingerplay: If You Want to Hear a Story

Book: Sheep Go to Sleep
Sheep Go to Sleep (board book) (Sheep in a Jeep)
*I love using this book because I have two-sided sheep that I place on my flannelboard. One side the sheep are awake and the other side they are asleep. As I'm reading, my volunteer will flip them over from awake to asleep. I will stop reading and then we will count how many more sheep need to fall asleep. The two's did really good in helping me count! I love this book because it helps with counting skills and you can learn farm animals at the same time.

Fingerplay/Flannel: Pete the Cat's Missing Button
*This time we hunted for Pete the Cat's button. We looked for his button behind Elephant & Piggie, Curious George, Llama Llama Red Pajama, Clifford and The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

Fingerplay: Farm Animal Action Cards

Board Book: Time for Bed, Nori
*This is a really cute lift-the-flap book that you can do so much with! On each page you can ask the kids to help you choose what Nori, the character of the book, needs to do. I don't normally do this with the two's, but this storytime I had some older two's so I asked them what Nori needed to wear to bed. The choices were silly, and they told me right away Nori needed PJ's! A great book that you can choose to just flip the flap down to reveal the choice or make it more interactive and ask questions before you reveal the picture.

Action: Dancing
*To end storytime I handed out different colored bears. We danced around with our bears before placing them on the big bed I had up on my flanneboard.

*The two's made the same craft as pictured above, much to their delight!

X is for X Marks the Spot (Preschool and Two's)

Preschool Storytime

Opening: Big Books

Guessing game

Fingerplay/Flannel: Five Ocean Creatures

Book: Whale In My Swimming Pool (Volunteer Doing ASL)
*I haven’t done a guessing game through an app in a long time, but I really need to start doing this again!  The preschoolers loved telling me what ocean creature they saw and this is a great learning tool to use.

Fingerplay: Five Little Pirates Jumping on the Ship

Book: Pirate Nap
Pirate Nap: A Book of Colors by [Smith, Danna]
*This is such a great book to use for learning your colors! I made pirate hats that corresponded with each color that was introduced. As I got to that color, I would hold up the pirate hat and have the preschoolers tell me what color it was. At the end of this post there is a picture of all my pirate hats up on the flannelboard.

Fingerplay/Flannel: Hiding Game
*For this we hunted for a tiny fish behind different colored seashells.

Fingerplay: Five Little Fishes Swimming in the Sea

The craft for today is an adorable paper bag pirate! The preschoolers loved making it, and I think primarily because it was a paper bag.

Two’s Storytime:

Opening: Big Books

Fingerplay: If You Want to Hear a Story

Book: Pirate Nap
Pirate Nap: A Book of Colors by [Smith, Danna]
*This is such a great book to use for learning your colors! I was a little worried that this would be too long for the two's, so I did skip a few pages. Otherwise, this book was perfect! I made pirate hats that corresponded with each color that was introduced. As I got to that color, I would hold up the pirate hat and have the two's tell me what color it was. At the end of this post there is a picture of all my pirate hats up on the flannelboard.

Fingerplay: Five Little Pirates Jumping on the Ship

Fingerplay/Flannel: Hiding Game
*For this we hunted for a tiny fish behind different colored seashells.

Book: We’re Going on a Treasure Hunt

*This book is absolutely perfect for storytime! I love how you can make this book as interactive as you please. The two's loved stomping their feet and waving their arms as we went all throughout the book. What did we find at the end? A treasure chest, of course! Naturally I had to throw out gold coins at end. Not real ones, paper coins, I promise.

*The two's did the same craft as the preschoolers, which is pictured above. I've never seen the two's this excited about a craft, they didn't even put up their carpet squares! They just took off and ran straight back to the tables and started making the pirates!

W is for Who's in the Zoo (Preschool)

Unfortunately, I was sick this week so I only was at work for preschool storytime.  That's why I've only put the preschool plan below.  Thankfully I had everything planned out, so my boss graciously stepped in and did two's storytime for me!

Preschool Storytime:

Opening: Big Books

Book: Who Am I? By Steve Jenkins

Fingerplay/Flannel: Lion Hiding Game

Book: What to do if an Elephant Stands On Your Foot
*This book is so funny to read-aloud. I've never used it in storytime before, but I'm so glad I did! The reactions of the preschoolers were so much fun, I highly recommend using it.

Action: Shaker Eggs

Our craft is an adorable paper koala hanging out on a paper towel roll! The preschoolers loved having the 3-D effect of the koala hanging on the stick.
