Counting Storytime

This week our letter is "O" for one and counting.

Below are the books I read (for all three storytimes-preschool, two's, lapsit), fingerplays and crafts we made.

Book: How to Count to 1

Book: Counting to Bananas

Book: How Many Squirrels Are in the World?

Book: Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons

*Had to throw in a picture of me dressed up like Pete the Cat.
*I like to have paper buttons "rain" down on the kids like confetti as I read this book.  They go crazy anytime I do this with them!

Book: Hen in the Bed

Seek and Count (Preschool Storytime)

Opening:  If You Want to Hear a Story, Clap Your Hands (Tune: If You’re Happy and You Know It)

If you want to hear a story, clap your hands! (repeat twice)

If you want to hear a story, if you want to hear a story.

If you want to hear a story, clap your hands!

Book: One-Osaurus, Two-Osaurus

Fingerplay: Ten Kittens

Ten little kittens standing in a row (Palms facing forward, fingers extended.)
They bow their heads to the children just so (Bend fingers back and forth.)
They run to the left, they run to the right (Move fingers to alternate sides, wiggling fingers.)
they stretch up tall with all their might. (Also do high, low, behind, front, fast, slow.)
Along comes a dog, looking for some fun. (Fingers of one hand resting on thumb, move towards other hand.)
"Meow!" Away those kittens run! (As you meow, open both hands with fingers extended.  "Run" hands behind back.)

Book: One Sheep, Two Sheep

Fingerplay: 5 Little Bugs
*For this I have three large bugs I've made, picture below. You can do this a number of ways, put the bugs up on your flannelboard, or attach them to rulers and wave them around. I've also give volunteers or staff helping me a bug to hold up also.
3 little bugs were flying through the air (make motions with hands)
Buzzing around without a care
Along came a frog with a hippety-hop (Hop up and down)
GULP! GULP! GULP! (snap hands together)
One bug was caught!

Book: Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons

Closing: We Wave Goodbye Like This (Tune: The Farmer in the Dell)

We wave goodbye like this,

We wave goodbye like this.

We clap our hands for all our friends!

We wave goodbye like this.

We wave goodbye really fast,

We wave goodbye really slow.

We turn around and take a bow,

And then it’s time to go!

Q is for Quack and Count (Preschool and Two's)

Preschool Storytime:

Opening: Big Books

Book: Step by Step
*This is such a fun guessing book to use in storytime. The preschoolers did really good in telling me what animal made the footprints.

Fingerplay/Flannel: Baby Duck, Baby Duck Hiding Game

Book: Seek and Count
*I was so excited to use this book in storytime, but the preschoolers weren't as excited as I was about it. Sometimes it happens and that's okay, but I will definitely give it another try with them.

Fingerplay:  Ten Little Froggies (Only do five and use five green and speckled frogs prop)
One little froggie goes hop
Along comes another and they just can't stop so...
Two little froggies go hop, hop
Along comes another and they just can't stop
Three little froggies go hop, hop, hop
Along comes another and they just can't stop. soo
Continue in this manner and end as follows
Ten little froggies go hop, hop, hop, hop hop
Drop! time to stop
Hop each time you count the froggies...and when you get to ten hop ten
times and count on fingers...fall gently down to floor

Dancing: Animal Dancing
*To end storytime I passed out two types of animals that I have cut out and laminated. After we danced around with them, I called out for each animal and we stuck them to my flannelboard.

Our craft is a duck, of course! I wanted to incorporate letters or numbers, so we spelled out quack and the preschoolers did amazing matching up the letters.
