Go Green! (Preschool and Two's)

Preschool Storytime:

*Unfortunately, we had no heat in our auditorium, so we moved our storytime downstairs to the Youth Services department. I had to rearrange what I had planned a little bit, but we made it work with a great crowd of 28 kids!

Opening: Big Books

Book: Green Eggs and Ham
*My volunteer read the part of Sam I am.  I had actual green eggs to eat when I got to the end of the book.  The best part?  After I ate the green eggs, I got choked!  The kids thought it was hilarious!

Fingerplay: Color Hop Song (Tune: Old MacDonald)
I see something that is green.
         Do you see it too?
I see something that is green.
         HOP there if you do.
         With a hop, hop here.
         And a hop, hop, there.
Here a hop, there a hop.
         Everywhere a hop, hop.
I see something that is green.
         Do you see it too?
*We had the alligator and frog visit us!

Book: Go! Go! Go! Stop! (With props)
*For this, I held up a green sign that said "Go". My volunteer held up a red sign that said "Stop". I told the kids to shout out each word every time we held up our signs. Since we were downstairs, I told the kids it was okay for us to be loud. I was worried that they wouldn't participate, but no need for that! They shouted right along with me, and it was so much fun! I almost didn't use this book, but I am so happy that I did.

Fingerplay/Flannel: “Five Green Shamrocks” (use puppets)
           Five green shamrocks growing outdoors
[Alligator] picked one, and that left four.
Four green shamrocks, green as they can be.
[Snake] picked one and that left three.
         Three green shamrocks playing peek-a-boo
[Lion] picked one and that left two.
Two green shamrocks nodding in the sun,
[Monkey] picked one, and that left one.
One green shamrock for St. Patrick’s Day fun.
[Dinosaur] picked it, and that left none.

Book: Go Away, Big Green Monster!
*This is my favorite green book, don't you agree? The best part that happened while I was reading this book. Three little girls put their arms around each other, and gasped each time parts of the monster disappeared. Priceless!

*Our craft today was three green frogs spinning around on the lillypad!  We put a brad in the middle of the lillypad, so that the kids can turn the frogs around and around.

(Have puppets pop up: snake and alligator.)

Book: Go Away Big Green Monster!
*The two's went crazy over this book! A few of them came up and wanted to help me turn the pages! It was wonderful watching their reactions watching the green monster disappear.

Fingerplay/Flannel: Green Egg
I am Sam, Sam I am.
I do like {pink} eggs and ham.
*I apologize, I have no idea where this came from. If it's your fabulous idea, please tell me! I start out telling the kids I want to show them my "green" egg. Of course, I show them every egg but the green one. I was worried this would be too confusing for the two's, but they loved it! One of them told me I was just being silly!

Dancing: Green Egg Dancing

*Our craft today was three green frogs spinning around on the lillypad!  We put a brad in the middle of the lillypad  so that the kids can turn the frogs around and around!

X Marks the Spot! (Preschool and Two's)

Preschool Storytime:

Opening: Big Books

Book: Pirate’s Perfect Pet

*This is my favorite pirate book, and if you've read it you'll understand why!  The kids loved making all the animal sounds with me.  The best part?  When the parrot pooped on my head.  Because my volunteer threw a piece of white felt on top of my head so that I was literally pooped on!  The grown-ups got quite a chuckle out of that.

Fingerplay: Five Little Pirates Jumping on the Ship
Five little pirates jumping on the ship
One fell off and took a dip.
The captain yelled out on his sip,
No more pirates jumping on my ship!
-Continue singing until no more pirates, then:
No little pirates jumping on the ship,
The captain's all alone with a pouting lip.
The pirates climb aboard and drip, drip, drip.
Back to work, let's sail our ship!
*I was really excited to change up the words to the traditional rhyme, five little monkeys jumping on the bed. But the kids didn’t like this at all! I will know from now on to not do this.

Book:Pirates Love Underpants

Flannel: Make a Pirate
*For this, I made a pirate for my flannel, but without a hat and shoes. I asked the kids what he needed, and thankfully they told me shoes. So instead of putting on boots first, I put ice skates, and then rain boots. After putting on the correct shoes we moved onto the hat. The kids went crazy telling me what I had done wrong. Such a fun flannel!

Book: Pirate Treasure Hunt!
*I love this book because it reads just like "We're Going on a Bear Hunt". We used puppets during this to help keep the kids interest. I had an inflatable treasure chest full of gold coins, propped up on a table. At the end of the book I threw my pretend gold coins on the kids. (The gold coins were actually round yellow circles cut out of paper.)

Extra Books:

Two’s Storytime:

*This never happens, but I actually ran out of things to do today!  Shocking, right?  I always overplan, but today I had too little.  But I just ended a bit early, because the two's were getting a tad restless.

Opening: Big Books

Fingerplay: If You Want to Hear a Story

Book: I Spy Under the Sea

Fingerplay: Five Little Pirates Jumping on the Ship
*Instead of jumping like monkeys today we jumped like pirates today!

Fingerplay/Flannel: Ocean Action Cards

Book: Pirate Treasure Hunt
*I love this book because it reads just like "We're Going on a Bear Hunt". We used puppets during this to help keep the kids interest. I had an inflatable treasure chest full of gold coins, propped up on a table. At the end of the book I threw my pretend gold coins on the kids. (The gold coins were actually round yellow circles cut out of paper.)

Fingerplay: Make a Pirate
*I was excited to do this flannel with the two's today, but it didn't go over very well with them. Maybe it was too much for them? Could be!

Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss! (Preschool and Two's)

Preschool Storytime:

Opening: Big Books

Book: Shorty & Clem
*I was so excited to read this book! Shorty the dinosaur opens his friends birthday present, and inside is monkey houseshoes! Of course, I have my own monkey houseshoes! So I put them in a box and opened them up in front of the kids as I was reading the story. Sometimes a story just doesn't work, and unfortunately this one didn't work in storytime. But I still think it's a great story!

Fingerplay/Flannel: Cat Guessing Game
Cat in the hat, all white and black?  Behind which colored hat are you at?

Book: Hop on Pop
*Since this book is lengthy, I only read two pages where it says "We like to hop on top of pop". I usually hold up a stop sign and we jump up and down until I hold up my sign and say STOP!

Book: Pete the Cat and the Missing Cupcakes
*Who doesn't love Pete the Cat? He rocks! For this book I prop up ten cupcakes behind me on the puppet stage. As I'm reading, the cupcakes will disappear behind me just like the do in the book. The kids love seeing items disappear and this one never disappoints.

Fingerplay/Flannel: Green Eggs and Ham
I-am-Sam. Sam-I-am.
I do so like ____ eggs and ham.
(insert color)
*The kids always love telling me that I have the wrong color or wrong item. But this time they all jumped up off their carpet squares to correct me! I love it when they all get into the action or flannel board. It lets me know that I've truly grabbed their attention and I'm doing something right.

Fingerplay: Five Little Cupcakes in the Bakery Shop
Down around the corner at the bakery shop
Were five yummy cupcakes with sprinkles on top
Along came ________ with a dollar to pay
He/she bought a cupcake,  and took it away!
*Sometimes I will feed my puppets slices of a birthday cake that we've got made instead of cupcakes.

Book: Wolf’s Coming!
*We had a very special treat today. A co-worker and his brother assisted me with this story. While I read the book, one of the brothers did sign language! It was so much fun, the kids really enjoyed it. But I honestly think the parents got more out of it than the kids did! We are hoping to do this once a month as time goes on.

Our craft today was a cat holding a cupcake!

Extra Read-Alouds:

Hello from Cat in the Hat! This is me in my makeup and headband that my mom made me.

Time for Two’s Storytime:

*Sometimes you just decide at the last minute to change everything up! I had all different books picked out and wasn't happy with any of them. I'm really happy I switched them because the kids loved all of them that I read! I love having a plan and it terrifies me to think that I'd just have to jump up and do a storytime without any planning. But also, I don't stick to my plan exactly, I will change it up on a whim too. But I have to have a structured layout to go by. Some kind of organization has to be there for me and my OCD mind!

Opening: Big Books

Fingerplay: If You Want to Hear a Story

Book: Little Mouse and the Big Cupcake
*The kids were so quiet but loved seeing the cupcake disappear! For this I have a giant cupcake on my flannelboard, and the top of it is in tiny pieces. As I read the story, I feed pieces to my puppets.

Fingerplay/Flannel: Cat Guessing Game

Book: Wolf’s Coming!
*Again so quiet but loved the ending and book too!

Action: Birthday Cake in a Bag

For the two's we already had the cat glued down for them.
