E is for Everybody is Yawning (Preschool and Two's)

Preschool Storytime:

Opening: Big Books

Book: Good Night, Mr. Panda
*How can you not be in love with Mr. Panda???? I've never read any of these books in storytime before, so I was so happy to do this one. Sadly, it received a lukewarm reaction. Don't get me wrong, the preschoolers didn't hate it, but they didn't rave over it either. Still, I will always love the Mr. Panda books!

Fingerplay/Flannel:  Five Cozy Blankets
5 cozy blankets with patterns galore,
1 covered Rabbit and then there were four.
4 cozy blankets as snuggly as can be,
1 covered Raccoon and then there were three.
3 cozy blankets with dots red and blue,
1 covered Fox and then there were two.
2 cozy blankets made just for fun,
1 covered Bear and then there was one.
1 cozy blanket left out in the sun,
It covered Owl and then there were none.
*This is one of my favorite flannels to do for bedtime, and it never gets old! I never cover up my animals the correct way, just to get the preschoolers riled up. I have clipart of my animals I place up on the board, and when I place the blanket over the animal, I'll put it sideways, over the head, something silly to get a reaction out of the preschoolers. This will have much laughter happening, which is exactly what I am after.

Fingerplay: Put the Baby to Bed
*I've used this once before, and this time the preschoolers were so excited to do it! I highly recommend doing this them, its such a great way for them to stretch their imagination.

Book: Firefly Home
*This is another stunning picture book by my fav author Britta Teckentrup. You are chasing the light of the firefly through each page, which prompts great discussion with the preschoolers about what they are seeing.

Fingerplay/Flannel: Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed

Action: Dancing with Bears
*For this, I have a big bed that I have velcro stuck on. Then I've taken little bears that I've made, and put more velcro on them. This way, after we dance around with our bears, the preschoolers can "stick" their bears to the bed or the flannelboard itself. They love doing this, its so cute!

I have to say this craft made me so happy! We laid out the hair, pajama bottoms, houseshoes and items for the preschoolers to glue onto the top. I have to say, the hair that they glued down was the cutest! I wish I took pictures of some of the finished crafts, they were so precious. We did have a few mo hawks!

Time for Two’s Storytime:

Opening: Big Books

Fingerplay: If You Want to Hear a Story

Book:  My Bed
*This book went over okay with the two's. Some of them really loved it, and some were just okay with it. You just never know sometimes, but I still like it.

Fingerplay/Flannel:  Bug Hiding Game
Little bug, little bug, are you under the {red} rug?

Fingerplay: Animal Action Cards
*For this we stood up and acted like a bunch of different animals, while my volunteer had each puppet visit us while we did this.

Action: Dancing with Bears
*For this, I have a big bed that I have velcro stuck on. Then I've taken little bears that I've made, and put more velcro on them. This way, after we dance around with our bears, the two's can "stick" their bears to the bed or the flannelboard itself. The two's love sticking anything to the flannelboard, so this is a perfect opportunity for that.

The two's did the same craft as the preschoolers did, which is pictured above. The only difference is the two's had bunny rabbit house shoes and they glued down dots onto their pajama craft.

Extra Books:

D is for Dog Loves Drawing (Preschool and Two's)

Preschool Storytime:

Opening: Big Books

Book: This Book Just Ate My Dog (Special Guest doing ASL)

*The preschoolers really enjoyed telling me all my animals kept disappearing inside this book! This book is such a great interactive book to use. I especially love the part where the book "burps" up all the characters.

Fingerplay/Flannel: Five Little Doggies Jumping on the Bed

Book: This Book is RED
*I was so excited to read this book, but the kids didn’t enjoy it like I had hoped. One thing that really touched my heart was a mom came up to me afterwards and was reading some of the smaller lines that I didn't read aloud. That was really cool to me. This book might work better as a one-on-one, because there is so much to read on each page. I do recommend it, just not a storytime book for me.

Fingerplay/Flannel: Animal and Homes Matching Game
*For this flannel board I have different animal homes that I put up on my board. A doghouse, nest, fishbowl, etc. Then I place my animals in the wrong spot. Instantly the preschoolers started telling me where I had everything wrong, which was exactly what I was after. I love doing things like this, helping them learn when they think that all they are doing is correcting me when I'm dong something wrong.

Book: The Case of the Missing Chalk Drawings

*This is the first time I've read this book in storytime, and it went really well! I had the preschoolers do actions with me and that really helped move the story along too.

Action Song: IIf You’re a Drawing and You Know It
If you’re a crayon and you know it, then scribble! (wave scarf around and around)
If you’re a crayon and you know it, then scribble!
If you’re a crayon and you know it, all your scribbling will show it,
If you’re a crayon and you know it, then scribble!
*Paintbrush…swish around (wave scarf really fast)
*Pen…Pop your lid (ball up scarf in hands then throw up into the air)
*I am trying to end each storytime with something interactive. For this wonderful fingerplay I wanted to work in scarves. So, at the end of the lines I put down what we did with our scarves. The preschoolers adore dancing around with scarves and this time was no exception to that!

We had games today after storytime for preschool and again later this week for two's.  You can see everything that we did this week by clicking here!

Our craft today was a scruffy, adorable doggie!  Some of the girls put the bow up at the top of the doggie's ear which just melted my heart.  So precious!  The only addition to the picture below is we had a paper crayon that the preschoolers could glue to their picture.  One little boy did use his crayon as a collar for his doggie.  So cute!
Credit: I can't give credit, because there was only a picture on pinterest.  Sorry!

Extra Books:

*This book is amazing!  I wish that I had it in time for storytime, because there are flaps that you lift to show what Andrew is really drawing, which really makes this book astounding!  Next time I definitely plan on reading this book.

Time for Two’s Storytime:

Opening: Big Books

Fingerplay: If You Want to Hear a Story

Book: Will You Help Doug Find His Dog?

*This is a long book for the two's and because of that reason I was worried. Surprisingly they did fabulous listening to it! What helped was this book is interactive so we did lots of actions all throughout the book, which is one of the many reasons why I love it so much.

Fingerplay/Flannel: Five Little Doggies Jumping on the Bed

Book:  Dog’s Colorful Day

*As I'm reading this book, my volunteer held up our big dog puppet. Each time dog would get another spot on him, I would take a spot and put it on my puppet. The two's thoroughly enjoyed watching my puppet get covered up with spots!

Fingerplay/Flannel: Hiding Game

Action: Bubble Machine

*Our craft today was the same one pictured above. The two's did a great job with this craft, they really seemed to enjoy making the dog!

August Sensory Games and Bins

This month our games centered around dogs, farm and food.  What a combination, huh!

1.) Cow Putt-Putt
I had a lot of fun making this for the kids.  It was really easy, I just cut a hole out of an old box and covered it with paper.  Then I just made the cow out of construction paper.  We have a child's set of putt-putt that we keep, and the kids go crazy over putt-putt!

2.) Dog Bones Sensory Bin
I've seen lots of versions of this online, so I wanted to make my own.  I have a box that I use over and over for this.  The trick I've found is to leave one of the flaps open on the back, so that when you need to get your items out of the box, you can just open the flap up very easily.  The only thing that didn't work out good with this was I hid the different colored bones inside streamers.  Normally the preschoolers will only dig out the items we are "feeding" and put them inside the box.  For whatever reason they stuffed everything they could into the box which made it very messy.  But overall they loved this game.

3.) Chicken Eggs Sensory Bin
I was so excited to do this with the kids, but I didn't think about them opening up the Easter eggs, to see what prize was inside.  Once I got them to understand that the eggs were chickens and to put them into the right colored bowl, it was a lot of fun for them to do.  Super easy to prepare too!

4.) Mouse Cookie Alphabet Match
This game I only did with the preschoolers, but they are doing amazing with learning their letters.  This is a free download and its adorable!
