Let's Get Silly! (Preschool and Two's)

When I do a silly storytime, I like to make everything I possibly can look silly, including myself! I put holiday tablecloths on my tables, stand all the books upside-down , and put up a silly bulletin board. I like to wear my Dr. Seuss boxers, different animal houseshoes, and a silly headband.

Opening: Big Books

Book: Help!  Wolf is Coming!
*The kids loved this book! I was hesitant about using a board book with the preschoolers, but this book is an interactive book, so that won me over. All through the book the wolf is inching closer and closer to you, and you have to prevent him from catching you by doing all sorts of fun actions. The kids really got into doing everything along with me and we had lots of fun with this book.

Fingerplay/Flannel: Silly Bananas
*The kids went crazy over this flannelboard! I found this wonderful idea here. My favorite part of this was peeling the banana down and letting the kids shout out the color of the banana.

Book:  Polar Bear’s Underwear
*Who doesn't love a polar bear in underwear! I love reading this book for silly storytime, and the kids loved this book! It always helps when you use puppets, which we did for this book.

Fingerplay/Flannel: “Oh Where Has My Underwear Gone?” (Tune: Where Has My Little Dog Gone?)
Oh where, oh where has my {green} underwear gone?
Oh where, oh where can they be?
I’ve looked up high, and I’ve looked down low,
Did someone hide them from me?
*For this fingerplay, I took animals that had been made from clipart and put underwear on them. Then I took trees and bushes, and covered up just the underwear of the animals with the tree or bush. Next I asked the kids what color underwear the animals were wearing, before we revealed what the underwear looked like. The kids enjoyed this, but not as much as I had hoped.

Book: Book With No Pictures
*I love reading this book for the kids and making all the crazy and wacky sounds! Usually the kids go wild over this and want me to read it again, but this time it just didn't go over as well as it normal does. It's still a wonderfully silly read, one I will definitely use again.

Music: Shake Your Sillies

Action: I’m Being Eaten By a Boa Constrictor
*This is my favorite thing to do for the kids, and we take a giant hula hoop and turn it into a snake! The snake will end up eating me by going up and over my head! I'll be glad to explain how, just leave me a comment and I'll e-mail you a picture and how it's done. This was done by the librarian before me, and it never fails to entertain the kids. While saying the poem I will slowly inch the snake up my body. While I was doing this, the kids were utterly quiet, but in a good way!

Our craft was polar bear in his underwear!  I found the idea for this here, which also has a link for the coloring page that we used for our craft.  There are also some great flannelboard ideas, which I hope to use next time.  For the craft, the kids glued down polar bear's red underwear and little squares to decorate it with.

Opening: Big Books

Fingerplay: If You Want to Hear a Story

Book: Polar Bear’s Underwear (With Puppets)
*Who doesn't love a polar bear in underwear! I love reading this book for silly storytime, but the two's enjoy this book as much as they usually do. That's okay, it's still a fun, silly book!

Fingerplay/Flannel: Five Little Monkeys Swinging in the Tree
*You can't go wrong with this great fingerplay! The two's loved singing it today!

Book:  Do Cows Meow? (With Puppets)

*The two's enjoyed this book and helping me make all the silly noise sounds.

Music: Shake Your Sillies Out
*It's always fun acting silly and this time all our puppets jumped up and helped us! The two's loved seeing all the puppets dance behind me.
