Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss!

Preschool Storytime:

Opening: Big Books

Draw and Tell Story: Birthday Cake
*I really wanted to do this for the preschoolers, but I had way too much planned for this storytime. You can see this wonderful draw and tell story idea here.

Book: Five Little Monkeys Bake a Birthday Cake
*When I read this book, I love to have my volunteer act out the part of the mother. She will lay down on the table and go to sleep. All through the book we have to make sure we don't wake mama! The kids really enjoyed helping me make the sounds throughout the book, and I always asked them. Have we woken up mama? No, not yet!

Fingerplay/Flannel: Cat Guessing Game
Cat in the hat, all white and black?  Behind which colored hat are you at?
*This is a really fun game to play that fits in perfectly with the Dr. Seuss theme! You can find it here.

Book: Hop on Pop

*My kids love jumping up and down, so I just read two pages out of the book "Hop on Pop". I have my handy-dandy stop sign, and after we jump for a little bit, I throw up the stop sign! Then, we repeat this again and again!

Fingerplay/Flannel: Green Eggs and Ham
I-am-Sam. Sam-I-am.
I do so like ____ eggs and ham.
(insert color)
*The kids went crazy telling me that my eggs were not green! I started out telling the kids that I wanted to show them my green eggs. I then showed them every egg I had except the green one. By the time I made it to my green egg, they were all shouting out the color to me. It was so much fun hearing them correcting me. I love doing things like this, it's a great way of engaging them and helping them learn their colors at the same time. I found this fabulous idea here!

Book: Don’t Wake Up the Tiger!
*I was so excited to use this book, but the kids didn't seem to enjoy it as much as I had hoped. It's a wonderful interactive book, but it probably would work out better with a smaller crowd. Still, I think it's a winner!

Fingerplay: Five Little Cupcakes in the Bakery Shop
Down around the corner at the bakery shop
Were five yummy cupcakes with sprinkles on top
Along came ________ with a dollar to pay
He/she bought a cupcake,  and took it away!
*I love feeding my puppets things during storytime, and today I fed the puppets cupcakes! I found this rhyme here.

Storytelling: Mouse’s Birthday Present
*I was so excited to find this adorable flannel story, but again I had way too much planned for today. The story is so cute, and I hope to work this in next time. Check out this great idea here!

Action: Birthday Cake in a Bag
*I have no idea where this came from, we've always done this trick at my library. Take a party bag and put a hidden pocket inside. Then take a birthday cake out of paper and tuck this inside a pocket that is taped to the inside of the bag. I show the kids my "empty" bag, without letting the hidden birthday cake fall out. Then you drop in little paper cut-outs of flour, sugar and egg. I have the kids mix the cake with their hands while we sing "We're Mixing up the Cake". While we are singing, I am taking the paper cut-outs, and putting them under a piece of paper we've taped to the inside bottom of the party bag. After we've finished singing and mixing I hold up my bag and show the kids that the ingredients have magically disappeared! They are usually astonished and can't figure out where they've went! They I tell them I smell something delicious inside my bag, and slowly pull out the birthday cake from the hidden pocket inside. I hope this all makes sense, it's really super easy to do and I'll be more than happy to e-mail you picture of how it looks. Just leave me a comment below if you'd like to see them!

Fingerplay: If You Like Dr. Seuss (to the tune of "If You’re Happy & You Know it")
If you like Dr. Seuss, clap your hands
If you like Dr. Seuss, clap your hands
If you like Dr. Seuss when the Grinch is on the loose
If you like Dr. Seuss, clap your hands
If you like Green Eggs and Ham stomp your feet
If you like Green Eggs and Ham stomp your feet
If you like Green Eggs and Ham, then go tell Sam I Am
If you like Green Eggs and Ham stomp your feet
If you like Cat in the Hat shout hooray!
If you like Cat in the Hat shout hooray!
If you like Cat in the Hat, though he makes the fish so mad
If you like Cat in the Hat shout hooray!
*We didn't have time to sing this cute fingerplay today, but I love it! I found it here.

For our craft today the kids made Cat in the Hat. I found the idea for this here. Below is what our Cat in the Hat turned out to look like.
