Bug Games and Sensory Bins

Today we were buggy for books!  After storytime we had lots of fun games to play!  The preschoolers played everything I have listed below.  The two's played ladybug pom-pom matching, ladybug puzzles, caterpillar push and the ladybug matching sensory bin.  By far the two's enjoyed the ladybug matching sensory bins the most.  What I did to help them reach the bowls better was tape the colored leaves onto the seats of our chairs and put the four bowls of Easter grass in the chairs.  I think I could have had double the amount of bowls out for the two's to dig in!  The two's also thoroughly enjoyed the caterpillar push.  They didn't seem to enjoy playing with the ladybug puzzle matching or pom-pom matching, but loved the other games.

I tried to do games a little differently this month, to help the flow a little better.    Instead of having the same game on both sides of the table, I put out different games on each side of the table.  Unfortunately it didn't help the kids move around easier, so back to the drawing board!

1.)Frog Alphabet Matching Sensory Bin

My original plan for this game was to spell jump on one side of the table and frog on the other.  That way the kids could dig through different sensory bins, find the frogs and match them to different letters.  But somehow my frogs that I made to spell out F-R-O-G decided that they didn't want to play, and some of the letters hopped away!  You can find the full frog and lily pad alphabet printable here.

2.) Caterpillar Pom-Pom Push
I found the idea for this awesome game online, but the link is no longer working.  Thank you to the wonderful person who came up with it, the kids had a blast!  We stored our pom-poms in the lid that the LEGO's came in, which works out great if you need something to keep your pom-poms in.

3.) Ladybug Pom-Pom Colors
For this game, the kids matched each colored pom-pom to the correct ladybug.  I got this idea from an alphabet ladybug printable, which I plan on using next time.  You can find the ladybug alphabet printable here.

4.) Bug Counting
This was a great idea in theory, but let me warn you...don't use foamies!  I had to walk away from this game, and when I came back all the cute little bug foamies were stuck to my leaves!  Aaahhh..lesson learned!  This is a printable that comes with cute little ladybugs with the correct number of dots on their backs to match up to the leaves, and you can find it here, along with a lot of other wonderful learning centers for spring.

5.) Ladybug Color Matching Sensory Bin
The kids did awesome with this sensory bin, and we used green Easter grass to hide our bugs in.  The last time we did color matching with the color word printed out it seemed to confuse the kids but today they didn't have any problems matching up the bugs to right leaf.  I found this wonderful printable here.

6.) Ladybug Puzzles
I found the idea for ladybug puzzles here, so I made my own.  I used a full sheet of paper, made the ladybug then just cut them in half!

Splish and Splash (Preschool and Two's)

Preschool Storytime

Opening: Big Books

Book: Splish Splash by Smee
*I was worried this book would be too simple for the preschoolers, but they really got into it! Especially making the waves with their arms!  It never hurts when you use puppets, which were a huge hit!

Fingerplay: Old MacDonald Had a Pond (With puppets)
Old MacDonald had a pond ee-i ee-i-oh!
And on that pond he had a turtle ee-i ee-i-oh!!
With a snap snap here and a snap snap there!
here a snap, there a snap, everywhere a snap  snap
Old MacDonald had a pond ee-i ee-i-oh!
(repeat with fish/splash, duck/quack, frog/hop)
*I apologize, but I believe I found this in an office book we have for storytime use. I was really excited to use this with the kids, but it confused them when we sang this. All of the kids didn't like that I changed the song to Old MacDonald had a pond. I think they liked the traditional version of him having a farm.

Book: Row, Row, Row Your Boat by Cabrera (with puppets)
*This is my favorite go-to book for anything water related, and the kids loved it! I had my volunteer pop up the puppets behind me when I read each verse, and the kids went crazy helping me make all the animal noises.

Fingerplay:  Ten Little Froggies (Only do five and use five green and specked frogs prop)
One little froggie goes hop
Along comes another and they just can't stop so...
Two little froggies go hop, hop
Along comes another and they just can't stop
Three little froggies go hop, hop, hop
Along comes another and they just can't stop. soo
Continue in this manner and end as follows
Ten little froggies go hop, hop, hop, hop hop
Drop! time to stop
Hop each time you count the froggies...and when you get to ten hop ten
times and count on fingers...fall gently down to floor
*This is my new favorite fingerplay for frogs! I only did this through five, but the kids would have kept on hopping until ten if I had let them! We used five green and speckled frogs and put them up on the puppet stage. I had my volunteers just pull a random number of frogs down, and the kids went crazy telling me the frogs were gone! Then we stopped jumping and counted our frogs, then resumed jumping until all the frogs were gone. I found this fabulous fingerplay here. I can't wait to use this one again!

Fingerplay/Flannel: Five Little Fishies Swimming in the Sea
*I love doing this fingerplay with my alligator puppet and five fish, but we ran out of time for it today.

Book: Three Little Fish and the Big Bad Shark
*I love this book so much! A co-worker made props to go along with this book, so as I read along, all the fish popped up behind me, including the big, bad SHARK!!! At the end of this book the shark's teeth fall out, so of course I had to throw out paper shark teeth on the kids! I am always worried they will get tired of this book, but thankfully they never do!

Fingerplay: Ocean Animal Movement Cards
*I love using ocean animal movement cards, but I had way too much planned for today. Hopefully next time!

Action: Fishing Skit
*This is by far my favorite part of storytime! I take my trusty fishing pole that a co-worker left for us to use, and told the kids to let me know when they see a big fish behind me. I had two volunteers behind our puppet stage, and they would pop up the fish when I had my back turned. Thankfully, the kids started hollering like crazy that the fish was there. Of course, when I turned around, he was gone! Then I put my fishing pole in the water, and I will catch all sorts of crazy stuff! Anything from a (clean) sock, a (puppet) skunk, big sunglasses, etc. At last, I end up catching a tiny, baby fish that the kids haven't seen, and while my back is turned, up pop the big fish I have been after. Then I turn around and see them for the first time. The kids usually end up shouting so loudly that the whole library hears and that's exactly why I do it!

(tune: the Wheels on the Bus)
The turtle in the pond goes snap snap snap
snap snap snap
snap snap snap
The turtle in the pond goes snap snap snap
all morning long
Repeat with Frog/hop, Duck/quack, fish/splash
*This was a really fun fingerplay to do with the two's and they enjoyed doing the motions with me. I found this fingerplay here.

Book: Row, Row, Row Your Boat by Cabrera
*The two's didn’t enjoy this book as much as they normally do. It seemed that not singing the song the correct way throughout the book confused them.

Fingerplay:  Ten Little Froggies (Only do five and use five green and speckled frogs prop)

Easter and Egg Hunt (Preschool)

Preschool Storytime:

Opening: Big Books

Book: There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Chick
*The kids really got into this book and loved helping me flap my wings like a chicken every time we read that line. A great book for this theme!

Fingerplay/Flannel: Hippity-Hop, Hippity-Hay
*I forgot to grab my flannel Easter bunnies for this great hopping fingerplay, so we used Easter eggs! It ended up working out wonderfully, and I think I'll do this from now on for Easter! To see the words for this wonderful fingerplay, check it out here.

Book: Everybunny Dance!

*The kids loved this book!  Everybody got up and started dancing without me asking them! A great movement book and it fits in wonderfully at Easter.

Fingerplay/Flannel: Easter Egg Guessing Game
*I used the clues inside this book and made a guessing game for the kids. I found a really cute flannel egg for a dollar, and took clipart of all the items I was describing. Then the kids could tell me what I was talking about and I would pull them out of my egg. The kids didn't enjoy this as much as I had hoped, but I still think it's a really fun guessing game.

Book: We’re Going on an Egg Hunt
*This is a wonderful new Easter book and the kids loved it! We used puppets during this and the best part of the book is when the wolf shows up at the end and surprises everyone!

Fingerplay/Flannel: Seven Eggs
*I ran out of time to do my seven eggs storytelling, but it's always a great one to use!

Today's craft is the Easter bunny in a carrot car!  We found the idea for this fabulous craft here!
Extra Books:
Here Comes Easter Cat!
Picasso: The Tree Frog

Book: We’re Going on an Egg Hunt
*This is a wonderful new Easter book and the kids loved it! We used puppets during this and the best part of the book is when the wolf shows up at the end and surprises everyone! The next time I read this I plan on using flannel Easter eggs and placing them on the flannelboard as we go.

Fingerplay/Flannel: Hippity-Hop, Hippity-Hay
*To see the words for this wonderful fingerplay, check it out here. The kids had a blast hopping today!

Let's Get Silly! (Preschool and Two's)

When I do a silly storytime, I like to make everything I possibly can look silly, including myself! I put holiday tablecloths on my tables, stand all the books upside-down , and put up a silly bulletin board. I like to wear my Dr. Seuss boxers, different animal houseshoes, and a silly headband.

Opening: Big Books

Book: Help!  Wolf is Coming!
*The kids loved this book! I was hesitant about using a board book with the preschoolers, but this book is an interactive book, so that won me over. All through the book the wolf is inching closer and closer to you, and you have to prevent him from catching you by doing all sorts of fun actions. The kids really got into doing everything along with me and we had lots of fun with this book.

Fingerplay/Flannel: Silly Bananas
*The kids went crazy over this flannelboard! I found this wonderful idea here. My favorite part of this was peeling the banana down and letting the kids shout out the color of the banana.

Book:  Polar Bear’s Underwear
*Who doesn't love a polar bear in underwear! I love reading this book for silly storytime, and the kids loved this book! It always helps when you use puppets, which we did for this book.

Fingerplay/Flannel: “Oh Where Has My Underwear Gone?” (Tune: Where Has My Little Dog Gone?)
Oh where, oh where has my {green} underwear gone?
Oh where, oh where can they be?
I’ve looked up high, and I’ve looked down low,
Did someone hide them from me?
*For this fingerplay, I took animals that had been made from clipart and put underwear on them. Then I took trees and bushes, and covered up just the underwear of the animals with the tree or bush. Next I asked the kids what color underwear the animals were wearing, before we revealed what the underwear looked like. The kids enjoyed this, but not as much as I had hoped.

Book: Book With No Pictures
*I love reading this book for the kids and making all the crazy and wacky sounds! Usually the kids go wild over this and want me to read it again, but this time it just didn't go over as well as it normal does. It's still a wonderfully silly read, one I will definitely use again.

Music: Shake Your Sillies

Action: I’m Being Eaten By a Boa Constrictor
*This is my favorite thing to do for the kids, and we take a giant hula hoop and turn it into a snake! The snake will end up eating me by going up and over my head! I'll be glad to explain how, just leave me a comment and I'll e-mail you a picture and how it's done. This was done by the librarian before me, and it never fails to entertain the kids. While saying the poem I will slowly inch the snake up my body. While I was doing this, the kids were utterly quiet, but in a good way!

Our craft was polar bear in his underwear!  I found the idea for this here, which also has a link for the coloring page that we used for our craft.  There are also some great flannelboard ideas, which I hope to use next time.  For the craft, the kids glued down polar bear's red underwear and little squares to decorate it with.
