Action: Heart Dancing

Our craft today was a sweet dog! We did our own take on the craft I saw online, just to make it a bit simpler for the two's. I do have to say, I love the saying on the craft online, check it out! The reason we did our craft simpler is because we had our party today and the two's had yummy food to eat! I didn't want to overwhelm them with lots of stuff to do, so this was perfect.

Stack the Cats (Preschool and Two's)

Preschool Storytime:

*This is a completely new storytime for me, and it was so much fun! I was very hesitant about it at first, but I really loved it! I had to make a lot of flannels and props for this theme, but that's okay. I always keep them and try to work them in again sometime in the future. We had an amazing crowd for preschool storytime, 37 kids! Woo-Hoo!

Opening: Big Books

Book: Pete the Cat: Pete’s Big Lunch (Feed lunch to puppets at end.)
*I made a flannel for this storytime, which I have a picture of below. As I'm reading, I ask the preschoolers what food I'm putting up on the flannelboard. Once I get to the end of the story, where Pete the Cat calls his friends to come over to eat his lunch, I decide to do my own twist on the story. I have my volunteer behind me with puppets, and then I feed parts of the lunch to my puppets! The preschoolers loved this!

Fingerplay/Flannel: Five little Kittens Jumping on the Bed

Book: This Is Not a Cat

*I decided at the last minute to read this book, and the preschoolers liked it. The only thing I would change is to make some drawing to go along with it. The reason why is because the mouse int the story is teaching all the other mice what a cat looks like. I'd love to make drawings to hold up to show the preschoolers everything that's in the book. I did have my volunteer behind me so that we could have the cat puppet pop up and surprise us at the end of the book.
(Next time make drawings to hold up.  Still liked book.)

Fingerplay/Flannel: Five Little Kitty Cats (Make five cats to put on puppet stage.)
Five little kitty cats sleeping on the floor
One pounced away, and now there are four!
Four little kitty cats, cute as can be,
One leapt away, and now there are three!
Three little kitty cats, hunters through and through,
One caught a mouse, and now there are two!
Two little kitty cats, basking in the sun,
One slinked away, and now there's only one!
One little kitty cat got up to stretch and yawn,
I looked away...and now he's gone!

Our craft today was Pete the Cat standing up! The preschoolers really seemed to enjoy the fact that Pete would stand all on his own!

Time for Two’s Storytime:

Opening: Big Books

Fingerplay: If You Want to Hear a Story

Book: Stack the Cats

*I adore this book! What I did was make ten cats to use as props for this book. Then I stuck my cats to the front of boxes, so that I could literally stack the cats! The two's really liked seeing the cats being stacked right before their eyes. I wish I had done this story with the preschool crowd, I just had too much planned for them. But I hope to use this book in April with my preschoolers.

Book: Pete the Cat’s Big Lunch (Feed food to puppets)

Once I get to the end of the story, where Pete the Cat calls his friends to come over to eat his lunch, I decide to do my own twist on the story. You make my heart pop! (Party)

I am so excited, we are going to start having parties every couple of months!  The reason?  To help bring families into our library.  To show them what all we offer and plant a love of reading in their hearts!  By drawing them in through this event, we can get them to visit us again and again!  This is our first year having a love themed party, and our attendance was 21 kids.  I was hoping for more, but honestly it was a really good turn out.

I didn't want to advertise this as a "love" party, so my advertisement said "You make my heart pop!"  That way, it didn't scream Valentine's Day, and the popcorn on the sign that I made really caught the attention of everyone!  I stuck to that theme for my decorations too, which made this a lot of fun to plan.  Next year I'm thinking of possibly doing a construction theme?  Who knows, it's a year away!

Decorations:

For our setup, I had four round tables in the middle, so that people could sit and eat.  Around the sides, I had four long tables for crafts, one in the back with bingo, and one in the back for food also.
In the front of our auditorium was the putt-putt game and one other sensory game.

Food:
For food, we had popcorn, potato chips, gummy worms and cupcakes!  We did have a contest where the kids could guess how many gummy worms were in the jar, and the winner got to take home the jar.

Crafts:

Love Monster Torn Paper Craft
*The kids loved this!  What can I say, he's adorable!

You Stole a Pizza My Heart Craft
*This one was absolutely adorable!  I had crayons laid out, so that the kids could write the words on the plate themselves.  Hopefully they did, but I didn't get a chance to see.

Hedgehog Craft
*This was my favorite craft, and it seemed like the kids liked this one the most too!

Ninja Turtle Craft
*I wanted to have a craft that might appeal to boys, but we only had two boys show up!  Still, I love this ninja turtle.  I apologize, the link isn't working for me to give credit for this.

Games:

Love Monster Putt-Putt
*I had so much fun with this!  I ordered this putt-putt kit online, but wanted to do more with it than just setting it up.  I had this Valentine fabric, so I taped it down to the floor.  Then, I decided to mark the path with white hearts.  This was the favorite game for the kids!  They had so much fun with it!

Valentine Bingo
*Anytime we play bingo, the kids adore it!  I usually have small prizes they can win, and I always have books.  This time I was pleasantly surprised, a number of the books were picked!  Yeah!

Feed the Frog Kisses Sensory Game
*I was so excited to use this game, but unfortunately it wasn't a popular game.  I think it was just a little to young for this crowd.  But that's okay, I will definitely be using it for my storytime kids at the end of this month!

Snowy Blowy Winter (Preschool and Two's)

Preschool Storytime:

Opening: Big Books

Book: Bunny Slopes (With volunteer doing ASL)
*I wanted to give this book another try, hoping that the preschooler would enjoy it more this time. They did like it, but still not as much as I hoped. I absolutely love this book, because you get to do all the fun actions along with the rabbit as he goes skiing. Still a wonderful book but one I probably won't attempt again in storytime.

Fingerplay/Flannel: Make a Snowman

Book: Froggy Gets Dressed
*I can't believe I've never read this book in storytime before, it was so much fun! I made a really big flannel to go on my flannelboard. This way the preschoolers could see each piece of clothing Froggy had. To make this story more engaging, we jumped up and down each time Froggy went outside. This really seemed to help the preschoolers get more into the story. The favorite part of the story for them? The ending when Froggy forgot his underwear!

Fingerplay/Flannel: Snowman Hiding Game
Snowman, snowman, cold and round.
Under which mitten can you be found?

Fingerplay/Flannel: Snowman
Snowman, snowman, hat so red, pat your legs and nod your head.
Snowman, snowman, hat so blue, touch your knee, then your shoe.
Snowman, snowman, hat so white, clap your hands with all your might.
Snowman, snowman, hat so green, jump up like a jumping bean.
Snowman, snowman, hat so brown, reach up high then touch the ground.
Snowman, snowman, hat so black, rub your tummy, then touch your back.
Snowman, snowman turn around and sit back down!

Extra Books:

Our craft today was a penguin, my favorite winter animal!

Time for Two’s Storytime:

I was so surprised by how much I was able to do in storytime with the two's. I always over plan, because I don't want to feel like I'm scrambling to find something to do at the very last moment. But this storytime just felt like everything went so smoothly, and I was able to do so much with the two's. They listened so well, and yet really seemed to enjoy each book and action we did. Don't you just love when everything truly comes together? It doesn't always seem to happen that way for me, so I love it when you get lifted up and it happens!

Opening: Big Books

Fingerplay: If You Want to Hear a Story

Book: Froggy Gets Dressed
*To make this story more engaging, we jumped up and down each time Froggy went outside. I was worried this would be too long for the two's, so I didn't read everything that was repeated. This helped a lot, and the two's really enjoyed telling me what all Froggy needed to put on next!

Fingerplay/Flannel: Snowman Hiding Game
Snowman, snowman, cold and round.
Under which mitten can you be found?

Fingerplay/Puppets: There’s Something in the Snow”
There’s something in the snow, now what can it be?
There’s something in the snow that I can’t really see.
    Hear it’s funny sound…OINK OINK
A pig is what I found!
Contiunue with: Neigh, neigh, a horse is what I found.
Moo, moo, a cow is what I found.
Baa, baa, a sheep is what I found.
*I like to give mittens to my puppets, to help them stay warm!

Book: Peekaboo! In the Snow
*The two's loved seeing all the animals and saying Peekaboo!

Book: Mitten (Throw paper animals out onto kids at end.)
*Instead of reading this book I like to tell this story. We have two mittens already made, one small and one very big! As I'm telling the story, I show the animals to the two's and stick each animal inside my big mitten that's folded up. That way nobody can see the size of this mitten until the very end of the story. I've never done this before, but I decided to take little printouts of the animals and have them cut out. When all the animals come flying out of the mitten, I took the printouts I had and threw them in the air, out onto the two's! Such laughter and squeals of joy erupted! The two's were uper quiet watching the animals disappear into the mitten and were so happy when the animals came raining down onto them at the end.

The two's also made the adorable penguin!
