August 2018 Sensory Bins and Games

Below are our games and sensory bins for August.  Most of them were centered around cars and colors.  All of the games went over extremely well!

2.) Popcorn Matching

*For this game I just printed out the popcorn kernels, which you can find many freebies online.  Then I made the letters for the boxes, printed them out and taped them.  I had no idea how much fun the kids would have with this!  I did change this to shapes for the two's, and some of them still had a little trouble matching the shapes.  Next time I will probably do color matching for the two's.  I highly recommend doing a matching game with the popcorn kernels, my kids had so much fun with this!

3.) Car Letter Matching

*The preschooler did so good with this matching game!  I'm thinking about doing some word matching with them next month. (To get this freebie, just google car alphabet matching and you'll see it.)

4.) Carrot Colors Matching

*For this game, the kids go to dig through the butterfly petals to find the different colored petals.  Then they matched the carrots to the correct pot hanging on the bulletin board.  The kids went crazy digging through the butterfly petals!

Preschool Storytime:

Opening: Big Books

Book: The Mixed-Up Truck

*For this book, we had our special guest doing sign language as I read. We do this once a month, and it's absolutely awesome! I've never done this book in storytime before, and the kids loved it! The next time I use it, I plan on making props to go along with it. Hopefully construct a cement truck that I can pull out the different cake parts out of to show the kids.

Book: Let’s Go for a Drive!

*Who doesn't love Elephant and Piggie???? One of the main reasons I adore reading this book in storytime is because my volunteer reads elephant and I read piggie. Piggie runs around during the whole book, grabbing everything they need to go for a drive. I had all my props hidden all over the front of the room, so each time I had to get something, I would run around waving my arms and hollering. The preschoolers laughed hysterically at me and my over exaggerated acting of this book, which made it all worth it!

Also add wipers/swish, horn/beeps, etc.

*The preschoolers love singing songs, but telling them a different version of this song threw them a little bit. One adorable preschooler did tell me lots of fun verses to add to the song, so that was fun!

*I don't always do a lot of puppets with the preschoolers, so they love seeing them! We all had fun singing along with the puppets.

Once Upon a Time Party

I'm so happy to share this, we had our first "Once Upon a Time" party!  Below are pictures of our crafts, food and decorations.

We had a banner going down both sides of the auditorium.   The banner had unicorns, lions and other items on the shields.  On our walls were torches and chandeliers.

                          

*Our two back walls had purple tablecloths hanging down, tied in the middle.

For a game, who can resist castle putt-putt???

*How about trying to pull the sword out of the stone?  My boss made this astounding stone for us, and I had to dress up as Snow White!

*Castle craft with turrets and stones to glue on.

*Unicorn craft with different colored hair.  The girls loved the unicorn, but the yarn threading was a little challenging for some of the kids.

*We had shields for everyone, with unicorns and swords to choose from.

I forgot to take a picture, but we also had paper crowns laid out for the kids to make and wear.  Sorry about that!

*This is a picture of my faithful volunteer, my mom!  The kids ate all of our "twigs" or pretzel sticks, almost two pans of brownies, and the majority of the "dragon fireballs" or cheetohs.  I have to say all of the food was a big hit!  I did have a jar of magical jellybeans and the kids got to guess how many were inside.  We had eighteen guesses, which wasn't too bad!  We had 36 kids attend, which was good attendance for our first time doing this party!

*This is such a fun book to read, especially when you use a dragon puppet! That's the fabulous creature hiding inside the cave, a dragon! The preschoolers loved making the animal sounds along with me as we tried to guess the animal hiding inside our cave.

Dragon, dragon, touch the ground

Book: Huff & Puff

*For this story, I decided I wanted to make some props for my pigs. So, I made a house for each pig, and taped them onto a box. Then I tucked the happy pig into the first house, and as we "blew" down the house, my volunteer literally knocked the house into the floor! Much to the kids delight. Then my volunteer would show the pig to my kids, with the unhappy pig facing out. When we got to the last house, we tried huffing and puffing with all our might, but we couldn't knock down that house! But instead, my volunteer pulled out a yummy chocolate cake for the wolf! Which is what happens at the end of the story. I've included pictures below of the houses I made so that you can see what I did. All the houses folded down, but I cut out the windows so that you can just tuck each pig inside the house.

*This pig is the grumpy pig, can you tell?  LOL!

Fingerplay/Flannel: Five Knights

Five little knights, fearless and brave,

Went dragon hunting deep in a cave!

They heard a loud ROAR

Shaking the cave’s floor!

So one little knight ran away!

(Four… Three… Two… One…)

*The kids loved stomping our feet and roaring like dragons. The best part was watching all the knights run away behind me!

Book: Not Your Typical Dragon

*This book is great to read, but it was the last one I read and it was a little long. The thing that helped the most was that I had the items inside the story cut out of construction paper. So, when Cripsin the dragon breathes out teddy bears instead of fire, I would throw out little paper teddy bears onto the kids. They loved all the items being thrown out onto them!
