Preschool Storytime:
Opening: Big Books
Book/Flannel: Ants at the Picnic
*This is my favorite book to use for a picnic theme. Why? Because I prop up all the food that is in the story behind me on a puppet stage. (I have the picture of this above.) As I'm reading, my volunteer will pull down each item of food. Normally, the kids will shout at me that my food is being carried off by the ants. But this time the preschooler went crazy screaming and hollering. I've never had this reaction before!
Fingerplay: “We’re Going on a Picnic”
We’re going on a picnic, a picnic, a picnic.
We’re going on a picnic, what shall we bring?
How about a dinosaur? No? Then…..
How about some berries!
*For this flannelboard, I tuck the items into a picnic basket that is on the flannelboard.
Fingerplay/Flannel: Silly Bananas
Book: Ten Hungry Pigs
Flannel: Bears’ Feast
*The preschoolers loved telling me that all my food was wrong. To help get some action in the story, we stomped our feet as bear retrieved food.

Fingerplay:“We’re Going on a Picnic”
We’re going on a picnic, a picnic, a picnic.
We’re going on a picnic, what shall we bring?
How about a bathbub! No? Then…
How about a sandwich and a cookie!
Book: Pete the Cat and the Missing Cupcakes
*This is another book that I love having the food propped up behind me. As in the first book I read, my volunteer will pull down the cupcakes as I'm reading. Usually the kids will love shouting at me that my cupcakes are disappearing. I think they had sat through enough at this point, because they were a little antsy and didn't seem to enjoy this book as much as normal.
Fingerplay: Five Hungry Ants
Five hungry ants marching in a line, (hold up five fingers)
Came upon a picnic where they could dine. (eating motions with hands to mouth)
They marched into the salad, (march in place)
They marched into the cake,
They marched into the pepper…
Uh oh! That was a mistake! (hands to face with shocked expression)
A..a..a..choo!
*I love having items "rain" down on the preschoolers, so for this fingerplay I had pepper "rain" down on the preschoolers! They went crazy! I even had a few come up and throw pepper back at me!

For our craft today, I wanted to let the preschooler make their own sandwich. So, my volunteer and I came up with our own! We laid all the ingredients out in the middle of the table, and let the preschoolers pick and choose what they wanted. The sandwich opened up, and I have two pictures below showing this. My favorite part was when one of the preschoolers glued pepper onto his sandwich!
